Aromatic Sulfonation

• Sulfonating agent is SO3

  • 20% SO3 in H2SO4 (fuming Sulfuric Acid)

• Alternative Sulfonating agent is excess Sulfuric Acid

• Reaction Mechanism (Transparency 15.3)

• Using a diluted solution of H2SO4 will reverse the reaction and remove sulfonyl
